Historic buildings make up a considerable part of our building stock (one fourth for Europe). They are the trademark of numerous cities, and they will only survive if maintained as a living space. This means, that in order to save this heritage for future generations, we need to find conservation compatible energy retrofit approaches and solutions, which allow to preserve the historic and aesthetic values while increasing comfort, lowering energy bills and minimizing environmental impact.

After stalling last year, global capacity additions of renewable power are set to bounce back with double-digit growth in 2019, driven by solar PV’s strong performance, according to the International Energy Agency. The IEA expects renewable capacity additions to grow by almost 12% this year, the fastest pace since 2015, to reach almost 200 GW, mostly thanks to solar PV and wind. Global solar PV additions are expected to increase by over 17%.

New solar photovoltaic (PV) installations are set to reach a record high this year, driven by improving markets in Europe and the United States and fast growth in India and Vietnam, consultancy Wood Mackenzie said on Thursday. Low auction prices are also expected to help boost new solar PV capacity by the end of this year to 114.5 gigawatts (GW), 17.5% higher than 2018 and the first time new installations have exceeded 100 GW.

Researchers in Europe are developing a new kind of prefabricated energy efficient building façades, equipped with special insulation and solar panels.
These solutions are built far from the construction site, in an industrial environment, and can therefore be installed quickly and painlessly for homeowners or tenants

ETIP PV is highly supportive of the EU’s interest in following a pathway that leads to a max -1.5°C warmer world and encourages it to put in place the policies that will achieve this as cost-effectively as possible. This means acting soon because zero net-carbon emissions are required by 2050.
The EU targets will be achieved with a fully decarbonised and expanded power sector that provides services in heating and cooling, transport and possibly chemical feedstocks.

The settlement and accommodation problems brought about by the increase in world population had always been major issues; architecture was expected to develop solutions for.
The rising population and other problems our habitats had been suffering, led to immigration whereby architecture also had its share of unfortunate consequences.

National University of Singapore’s (NUS) School of Design and Environment (SDE) building, the SDE4, certainly stands out for its unique structure.
SDE4 is NUS's foremost net-zero building, and the first of its kind in Singapore to be built from scratch. SDE4 gets its power through a "solar farm" on its roof which comprises over 1,200 solar photovoltaic panels and boasts a range of innovative building strategies that focus on improving the well-being of its users.
