Hannover, 22.11.2012 – More than half of the overall world population is living in urban areas - with rising tendency. The permanently increasing urbanization can be driven to more sustainability by ecological concepts for mobility, energy-efficient buildings and intelligent energy supply. Intelligent energy supply had also been the main subject of the well-attended “Sustainable Energy in Buildings and Urban Areas” Symposium (SEBUA 2012) which took place in Kusadasi near Izmir/Turkey from October 14 – 20, 2012.

Installers of Small-Scale Renewable Energy Systems

Article 14(3) of the Directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (Directive 2009/28/EC or RES Directive) states that "Member States shall ensure that certification schemes or equivalent qualification schemes become or are available by 31 December 2012 for installers of small-scale biomass boilers and stoves, solar photovoltaic and solar thermal systems, shallow geothermal systems and heat pumps.

BEEP database is a global one stop shop for building energy codes, labelling and incentive schemes implemented in the 28 IEA member countries, BRICS countries and Tunisia for a total of 34 countries. BEEP currently provides detailed information on more than 400 building energy codes, 200 labelling schemes and 200 incentive schemes.

The jury for the 2012 Energy Efficiency Innovator Awards has selected the International Energy Agency’s Building Energy Efficiency Policies (BEEP) database as the winner in its “Projects” category. The prize will be bestowed to Dr Yamina SAHEB at the Energy Efficiency Innovator Awards Ceremony in Monaco on November 9th, 2012 .

The energy performance system is based on an asset rating of the energy demand of buildings. The buildings are classified in classes from A (best rating) to I (worst rating) on a primary energy and a heating energy basis. The actual minimal requirement for new buildings is a D classification in the two mentioned classes.

Non-Residential Building Certifiers

Member States generally differentiate between residential and non-residential building certifiers. The links provided in the Schemes Content section provide information on various training courses across the EU related to non-residential building certifiers. Some Member States require special training before a qualified expert can become accredited, while for others special training is optional. In both cases, there is usually an exam before accreditation is granted.
