The Pan-European Thermal Atlas (PETA) is an interactive map that shows data on the thermal resources available in any region as well as EU-wide thermal demand. PETA maps heat and cooling demand, the local density of both demands, available waste heat resources and the potential for renewable energy sources.

Directive 2010/31/EU (EPBD) indicates that EU Member States must ensure that by 2021 all new buildings, and already by 2019 all new public buildings, are nearly zero-energy buildings (NZEBs). Article 2 of the EPBD defines the term NZEB as a building with a very high energy performance and a nearly zero or very low amount of energy required, which itself is covered to a very significant extent from renewable sources.

Under the European Energy Efficiency Directive 2012/27/EU, EU countries should set up an energy efficiency obligation scheme. This scheme requires energy companies to achieve yearly energy savings of 1.5% of annual sales to final consumers.In order to reach this target, companies have to carry out measures which help final consumers improve energy efficiency. This may include improving the heating system in consumers' homes, installing double glazed windows, or better insulating roofs to reduce energy consumption.

Πέντε ευρωπαϊκές χώρες της Μεσογείου (Γαλλία, Ελλάδα, Ιταλία, Ισπανία και Κροατία) συνεργάστηκαν και ολοκλήρωσαν τις δράσεις τους, υπό το συντονισμό του Κέντρου Ανανεώσιμων Πηγών Ενέργειας (ΚΑΠΕ) στο ευρωπαϊκό πρόγραμμα REPUBLIC-MED, το οποίο έχει ως στόχο την ενδυνάμωση των μεθοδολογιών υπολογισμού της ενεργειακής αποδοτικότητας των κτιρίων και της εξομάλυνσης του φαινομένου της θερμικής αστικής νησίδας.

Five European Mediterranean countries (Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, and Spain), coordinated by the Centre for Renewable Energy Sources (ΚΑΠΕ - CRES), have cooperated in the European project REPUBLIC-MED, which aims at the strengthening of calculation methodologies of the energy efficiency of buildings and the normalisation of the urban heat island effect (UHI).
